CLASSES FROM THE PAST!!

Howdy Folks,
Sugar Creek Farm is happy to announce the dates for the Sixth Annual Organic Gardening Intensive, 2010. The class will begin on Saturday, April 10th, meeting six consecutive Saturdays and ending on May 15th. Class time is from 10 am to 2 pm with an hour break to eat lunch, socialize and wonder around the picturesque Sugar Creek Farm. This schedule allows us to cultivate both spring and summer plants in the greenhouse. Same as last year, we will be starting an entire greenhouse full of plants together, which you will be taking home to plant in your gardens as they become ready. I definitely got a bit carried with the seed order for this year's class; 85 varieties!! And this doesn't even include the varieties that we saved seed from last year. Check out the very end of this blog for the list. Absolutely nothing beats grow your own food! Please read on for more info on the class:

Hello Organic Gardeners

The 80 acre Sugar Creek Farm (click here for map) has been a working organic vegetable farm for 15 years! Although we spent many years doing local area tailgate markets, we now focus more on education, consulting and self reliant living. The farm operates completely off-grid and generates all of its electricity needs from solar panels. We also utilize compost toilets for dealing with human waste. Finally, the farm is part of more than 6,000 acres of land protected from development forever by way of a conservation easement donated to the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy.

We are currently still enrolling and have space for a few more folks, so if you have called recently please note that the only way to enroll is to pay for the class.

Please make your checks payable to Joseph Allawos and NOT sugar creek farm. The mailing address is: Joseph Allawos, 518 sugar creek rd., Leicester NC 28748
Please be aware that this class in not just a seed starting/greenhouse class. It is a six week, hands on intensive that covers all aspects of organic gardening, from disease management to insect management to weed management and beyond!

PLANT VARIETIES: NEW INFO: PLEASE SCROLL TO THE END OF THIS BLOG FOR A PARTIAL LIST OF PLANT VARIETIES! Still finalizing the list but you can sure bet it will beat anything you can find at the garden store or farmers market. Nearly all of our seeds come from Baker Creek Heirloom seeds. Please check out their website at http://www.rareseeds.com/ . They offer only naturally grown open pollinated varieties and we absolutely LOVE these folks. Last year, students were a bit overwelmed by the numbers and varieties of plants they took home. Way over 300 plants each! This means: FIND SOME DIRT! to make the most out of this class. Talk to friends and neighbors about using theirs and share the bounty with them.

STARTING YOUR OWN SEEDS: We do have limited space but we will let each student start some of their own seeds if they like and we can share the starts with the class. The instructor does reserve the right not to use some seeds, if they have been collected by the student and are of a variety that cross pollinates (Ex. squash).

CLASS FORMAT: We meet six consecutive Saturdays, April 10-May 15rd. If you cannot make it to a class you may send ONE proxy to take your place for that day. Classes start promptly at 10 am. and meet for 4 hours with a 1 hour lunch and wander break. Carpooling is encouraged! I will put you all in touch once we are done with enrollment.

Any other questions, please contact sugarcreekorganics@gmail.com.
